Green Miracles Do Happen!

HW_00009-550x412 A short post….. a link passed from a wonderful gardening friend brought the biggest smile to my face this morning! Those who recognize this photo [click on it for the link to the actual post at GardenRant] will immediately be able to place it as Heronswood Garden, the amazing botanical garden created by consummate plantsman Daniel Hinkley and his partner, architect Robert Jones in Kingston, Washington. To make a long story short, twelve years ago he, Hinkley, sold the gardens to W.Atlee Burpee Company. For die hard plant collectors and connoisseurs like myself, it felt like a deal being struck with the devil! Lets just say I’m not a fan of Burpee or George Ball for that matter! [Ironically the interview did nothing to change my opinion!]

At a recent closed auction, the gardens were put up in a sealed bid auction, and were won by the Port Gamble S’Klallam tribe, whose ancestral home includes the property that houses the magnificent Heronswood Gardens. Here’s hoping that there is a viable green future for the gardens.

I had a stunning Heronswood geranium a few years ago .. it disappeared and I couldn't even remember for sure where I had planted it .. shame on me for misplacing and losing a beauty.
I think the gardens going back to the real people of that land is a wonderful move no matter what they do, it was always theirs to begin with.
Hey .. can't wait for the radio show tomorrow night !!!
Joy wink wink

This is great news. For me, Heronswood was not just about touring a beautifully maintained garden. Hinkley's constant introduction of new plants made it about discovering amazing shade plants at every turn. Of course, it's always a joy to see mature specimens in an established garden but the thrill of discovering something new is what kept me going back.

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
