He had been the sole Clematis in the garden for quite a few years, clamoring up and through a wooden railing that is part of the front veranda. He came from what was then Richlyn Nursery, what would one day become LittleTree, the same nursery where ten years later I find myself employed. His name is ‘Blue Boy.’ A 1947 cross between C.integrifolia [a personal favourite] and C. viticella by Dr. F.L Skinner in Borden, Manitoba, right here in Canada. It’s 10-20cm steel blue flowers bloom prolifically between June and September. Its mature height is between 1.5m – 2m, and whilst it is a non-climber, it looks its best clamoring through a coniferous shrub with a decidedly fabulously chartreuse hue such as Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Filifera Lemon Thread.’ At the end of the day he reigns supreme!

We have a selection of random clematis that no longer fit our palette which will find new homes and in their place I have been looking for a colour just like this Blue Boy.

I think mine came from Richlyn's too...which likely means
ultimately from Christopher Andrew. Christopher used to come visit mine and wondered what I fed it. It is very tall, falls back over the fence to the ground and grows back up once more.
